I am 22 years old and have no debt and I am not married or in a relationship. I would really like to start up a bulk/natural foods store in my area. I have been saving whatever money I can so if I have to go into debt(I'll try to avoid it at all costs) I will at least have some saved. I also have been reading Business by The Book, by Larry Burkett (awesome book if you want to run a business by the Bible)

Does anyone have any start up how-to and/or advice?

Sorry, but I didn't notice this one when it first came up. I had not long left hospital, so I shall use that as my excuse.

Lots of questions come to mind as I read this. For example, have you got somewhere to run your business from. Would it be direct selling to your local community and if so would there be sufficient demand. If you are going to be selling locally, then it might be advantageous to do a little research amongst the local community to see what would type of things would be needed most.

My advice would be to stay out of debt. Start small and grow slowly, perhaps as you build up a client base, they will ask if you can get certain items in for them and so on.

I spent seven years in direct selling, I never sold anyone anything, just provided what they wanted, and I did very nicely thank you very much. I learned the importance of getting to know your clients, and providing them with a service. Often this was initially just advice, and some never bought anything, but they were all happy to recommend me to their friends and family's.

Hope these few thoughts will be of help and encouragement.

I'm obviously new to this forum, but have also looked into just this type of business.  Some towns are quite void of natural food shops and it can really be a busy-ness.  Wink

Not sure if you're a male or female, but there is a wide range of
start up loans and grants, particularly for women.  (watch out tho'
for the funding sources, which can be from the extremes)

If you can start this from home, it can save you the expense of
commuting and paying store rent...and when you grow you can
move to a bigger place.  Many shops have a small apartment attached, which would be adequate for a single person.

IMO, if I had a shop like this, it would not waste its space on
tons of vitamin pills...but rather, truly healthy foods.  HTH
