My husband is going to finally get me my own .22 for target practice.  The Ruger I learned on was about 7 pounds and too long and heavy to be comfortable for me, being that I am smaller than average.  He is going to Gander mountain with some men from our church, and they are all more urban types, so I wanted to get some advice here before he goes.  I will not be there to get a hands-on feel for the gun, and price is definitely an issue.
I came across the Marlin 795 with a synthetic stock. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=416672&pdesc=Marlin_Model_795_Semi_Automatic_w/Blue_Barrel_Synthetic_Stock&aID=510B2&merchID=4006 It is very lightweight, a nice compact size, inexpensive, and could be used by my oldest son (9 yo) as well.  (Plus, I'm partial to the removable clip over the internal magazine.)  The problem is that I've never even held a synthetic.  Does anyone have any experience or advice?  I want to make sure it still has a good feel - not flimsy and toy-like.
Also, I'm not sure if any of the following is relevant, but in addition to target practice, I plan to take the gun camping.  I have 5 children, ages 1-9, so my county demands trigger locks during storage.  I also plan to get a 20-gauge at a later date.  Thanks!

Hi!
I own a Savage 270 win 116 FCSS. (Here's the link; http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/116FCSS/) and Dad also has a 243 in a similar model.
I don't know how their stocks compare with other brands, but I love them. They are light, and indestructibly strong. They may not be as pretty as a wood stock rifle, but they are indestructable. They also have a  very good feel, in my opinion. I know Savage has a special 3d accu-stock feature, so they might be slightly different from others.

I read some reviews on this rifle, and (supposedly), the trigger is heavy (not necessarily bad, but it makes for harder aiming.) and the biggest magazine people seem to be able to find holds 15 rounds. Looks like a pretty nice rifle to me though!

HTH,
Patrick
