Any one know anything about cross bows?

I know nothing... so I don't even know what to ask... but I was thinking of getting one for DH, as he has always liked them and just recently mentioned liking to have one.

They're like any sporting good - there's a bunch of different models out there that do a bunch of different things... one thing to carefully consider - will he be hunting with it?  There are a wide variety of laws in different states about hunting with a crossbow; some states consider it the same as a regular bow, some states have a specific season, some consider it a firearm and some outlaw hunting with a crossbow completely.  So, I guess what he's going to do with it is a good first question - just target practice & tin cans, or hunting?

Other than that, buying a cross bow is just like buying a compound bow or a gun - spend as much as you can afford.  Within reason (obviously) you get what you pay for.

I will say, as a husband, if my wife was going to buy me a crossbow I'd rather it was inside of a card that said "let's go buy a crossbow" so that I could have some say in the matter... but we men are unpredictable, so that might or might not be good advice.

Crossbows are a firearm, just because they can be carried in a ready-to-fire status, minus any actual fire?

What about double-barreled (with TWO clothespins) rubber band guns loaded with creosote-coated cross sections of inner tube, to prevent cheating?  I can tell you, you get hit by one of those and it BURNS. Stains your britches, too.

Thanks, David.

Yeah, I lasted all of 3 or 4 hours without consulting DH.  Roll Eyes The thing is, neither of us know much about which kind would be best - they are not legal to hunt with here... but... uh... we always were intrigued by snipers... and the deer licks in the back yard are frequented... and...

Anyway, he would hunt with it, just not for the fun of it.  More of a fairly quiet way to obtain food. KWIM?

Any ideas/suggestions?

Would he want to consider the hunting-legal alternative...the compound bow?

I just found out this past weekend that PA and NJ has now legalized cross bows for all and other states should soon be following suit!!!  Neat to hear in an era where laws seem to be tightening...in our case they are loosening! So check into it, maybe your state is debating similar actions?
