Hard to know where to put this link! A combo of many alternative construction techniques.
www.simondale.net/house/index.htm

It doesn't get my full endorsement, but overall.... REALLY COOL!

I looked this up..... The house looks really neat!!! They have a forum there too, for questions and discussions pertaining to the house and similar low-impact building ideas. I was kind of confused though.... I didn't see where it gave a size.....  Huh

Okay, just did the math and the house is about 538sq ft........... IN case anyone else wants to know but doesn't want to do the math!  Grin

I had a friend show me this link before... this is one of the coolest houses I have ever seen... especially the reciprocal roof rafters. This has to be one of the most amazing innovations I have seen in modern roof technology.

Here is a google search link:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Reciprocal+roof

uh oh... now you have me on a roll:

So here is this amazing cob house with a reciprocal roof and a rocket stove that heats the house like an in-floor radiant heat system:

Rocket stove video that shows the idea of heating benches / beds with the exhaust gases...

Wow!  That is so neat!  We'd have to slap 2 of them together for our family though!

OK, I looked all over the web for a good resource on reciprocal frames and really did not find one... so the math and engineering this, you will have to do yourself. However I added about 15 photos to my flickr photo stream to show how to make basic reciprocal frame models...

Click here to see my photos on Flickr.com

I also show two and three tier models (which I could find no examples of two or three tier roofs actually having been built).

I did not demonstrate the reciprocal frame bridge idea that Da Vinici came up with... I leave that as homework to the diligent student.

First kid to post photos of a reciprocal frame fort wins my heartfelt applause... ("kid" of course being anyone who takes the time to try  Wink)

We're going to go out to some friend's property some time in the near future and see if we can build a fort out of scrub pine poles... we'll post photos.

A third tier would have raised this thing a lot... maybe 3 to 5 feet off the ground... but we probably would have to have notched the logs or tied them with rope since the third tier would have been at quite a steep angle. We will try to do three tiers with the pine poles. I just didn't have enough lumber laying around my backyard for three tiers today...

It doesn't take much to amaze me as I am simpleminded, but I am intrigued by this.. been picking at my brothers brain and getting him all stirred up to want to try this. Once I get my brother going my husband will join and then we all get to have fun!  Wink Really though my husband and I loved the pics of the original one and could really see ourselves doing this. The other  option is a cordwood cabin. Just some thoughts..

Neat! That would be a great design for a multiple person deer blind!! I'm gonna have to try this some day... We have tons and tons of cedar logs laying around!

PS: An other misc link I just found...

Paper by Biagio Di Carlo on RF

Anyone have subscription service to Springerlink (Nexorades Based on Regular Polyhedra) or ScienceDirect (Design of nexorades or reciprocal frame systems with the dynamic relaxation method)?

Woah... here we go...

Here is part of the Kim Williams article...

...and here is a complete pdf of the Baverel / Nooshin article!

Another Baverel paper, "Nexorade: a structure for 'free form' architecture"

Also, full-text of Reciprocal Frame Architecture by Larsen

DH, the kids and I have had fun using chopsticks to build various reciprocal frames. To make it easier for the kids (3yo & 4yo)to build, dh marked with two colors the ends of the sticks:

_________________________________________

If you mark them all in the same spots, you just always cover the "green" with a "red."  Our 4yo has no trouble; the 3yo almost gets it, but had trouble with the motor skills  Tongue

Clear as mud?
