While you are all enjoying your Turkey, pumpkin pie etc, etc, I think I have at last worked out how to shrink and post my photos. This is our home in Wales. Four hundred plus years old, stone walls about 2 - 3 foot thick, varies throughout the house with a slate roof. Questions welcome.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

Ray

I think you're mixing up your American Holiday's Ray. Smiley  This in Independence Day... all about Bar B Que's and fireworks.  Thanksgiving is in November.

aTurtleDove - Ray lives in the UK and I think he got our holidays mixed up.  Smiley

Boxing Day is an English thing... It was originally a day that the "Lord's and Ladies" of the manors set aside to take care of themselves so that the serfs and servants could have a holiday of their own.  I don't know how it got it's name or if my facts are right or how it's celebrated nowadays.  I'll have to look it up...

It looks like the part we can see is attached to a larger structure on the left, is that part of your house too or is the building's ownership divided?  If it is, was the entire structure built at the same time?  With the walls being stone, how is it wired and piped for electricity and water?

Thanks for satisfying our curiosity!  I LOVE old houses. Smiley

Boxing day is the day after Christmas day. Yes, the servants got a "holiday". Just a sample: St Patricks day, St Davids day, St Andrews day, St Doinwins day, St Valentines day, 12 July for protestants in Northern Ireland, and so it goes on. There are loads more, except we don't get holidays on most of them!

Our house is in the middle of three. The larger property on the left was the original farmhouse and used to be smaller, ours was a cow shed, and the smaller one to the right was the stables. A farmer way back decided thjat he would convert the cow shed and live in that. He then sold the old farmhouse with a small garden. The property was "improved" and enlarged by a subsequent owner. They actually took the roof of so that they could raise all the ceiling levels.

THe windows upstairs in our property are only a couple of inches off the floor and the roof comes down to meet them so the ceiling inside is sloped at the front. All the inside walls of the original house are timber, with the ceilings also timber, so our downstairs ceiling is our upstairs floor. The ceiling height upstairs is a little under 6 foot. Celts, the welsh, and the irish like myself tend to be on the small side.
